BlocBoy JB Offers Humble Assessment of Early Career: “I Never Once Thought I’d Get Rich Off It”

Now comes the hard part: staying rich.

BlocBoy JB entered the national conversation earlier this year when his Drake-assisted single, “Look Alive,” stormed the charts. Since its February 2018 release, the Tay Keith-produced song has been certified 2x Platinum, peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In a recent interview on Everyday Struggle, the Memphis native was asked if he feels any extra pressure to deliver a Drake-less follow-up to “Look Alive.”

“Nah, and that is what fucks you up because you tryna make a top-five record,” BlocBoy explained. “Even though you want to be on top of your game, you can’t think, ‘Oh, I need a top-five song,’ that means you thinkin’ too hard on one song. You need to worry about just making music.”

While JB has previously admitted that, before this year, he never fully understood the amount of work that is required to maintain a career in hip-hop, his outlook on future success would seem to indicate he now understands what it will take to extend his 15 minutes of fame.

“You gon get paid as long as you booking shows, as long as you’re having fun. That’s how it started,” JB added. “It all started off having fun. I never said, ‘Oh, I’m finna be a rapper.’ I did start taking it seriously when I had my little boy, but I never once thought I’d get rich off it.”

With a mega-hit in his back pocket featuring the most popular rapper on planet Earth, produced by one of the most in-demand names in hip-hop, you couldn’t blame the 22-year-old if he chose to boast about his breakout campaign. But rather than be a braggart, JB offered a humble assessment of his early rap career.

Now comes the hard part: staying rich.
